Achieving Health Equity Requires Understanding the Social Determinants of Health
Presented by Cultural and Minority Affairs Committee, Katie Farrell, PT, DSc, ACEEAA, and Talina Corvus, PT, DPT, PhD, GCS, ACEEAA

Knowledge of societal inequities is identified as one of five key components needed to live and work effectively in culturally diverse environments and promote fairness and the full participation of all members (Goodman DJ, The Cultural Competence for Equity and Inclusion model, 2014). This presentation will focus on knowledge of societal inequities by exploring the known social determinants of health (SDoH) that impact individuals and communities. Through understanding the conditions in which our patients live, learn, work, and play (cdc.gov) we can begin to improve individual and population health.

Long COVID – An Opportunity to Expand Our Therapy Toolbox
Presented by Jeff Schlimgen, PT, NCS and Christopher Terndrup, M.D.

Many people infected with COVID-19 have a prolonged recovery, with persistent symptoms in approximately 10% of infected people. This post-acute sequela of COVID-19 or Long COVID can occur irrespective of severity of illness. Multiple anatomical and physiological systems appear to be involved, thus creating a challenging clinical picture and necessitating a wide ranging toolbox. Little is still known about etiology or prognosis of Long COVID, but expert opinion point to the importance of rehabilitation interventions for cardiopulmonary, neurologic, and musculoskeletal systems. Fatigue is a prominent symptom for people with Long COVID and a novel approach of applying training methods used by endurance athletes will be presented.
