Local Opportunities:

  • 2020 Emerging Student Leader Award - Accepting Applications Now!
    • This award gives students first-hand experience in the governance of our profession at the state and national levels.
    • The award also includes support for the PT student to attend APTA National Student Conclave
    • The Emerging Student Leader Award provides funds for one PT student and one PTA student to attend the APTA House of Delegates (HOD), which will be held in Phoenix, AZ, June 1-3, 2020.

  • Global PT Day of Service 
    • PTDOS is an awesome opportunity for PTs, PTAs, SPTs, and SPTAs to come to together and give back to their community.
    • OPTA is proud to continue its service with Nightstrike. Nightstrike offers services in Portland every Thursday night for people who are unhoused. Its our turn to help out! Sign up to serve on October 10th or October 17th.
  • PT Night Out - Thursday October 17th
    • Meet up for a drink with other physical therapy students and professionals every third Thursday of the month at one of 14 locations across Oregon. Like the Facebook page here to stay up to date on events! A good time, guaranteed.

  • OPTA 2020 Annual Conference - March 14th, 2020

National News:

  • Where Things Stand, What APTA'S Doing: Fee Schedule, SNF and HH rules from CMS
    • This year's standout challenge: advocacy efforts around the CMS proposed physician fee schedule (PFS).
    • The rule as proposed includes at least 2 troubling provisions that demanded a strong response
      • How CMS would go about determining whether therapy services were delivered "in part" by a physical therapist assistant (PTA) or occupational therapy assistant (OTA)
      • Proposes an estimated 8% cut to reimbursement for physical therapists (PTs) and several other professions.
    • APTA continues to advocate for the profession, the association also provides its members with plenty of opportunities to get up-to-speed with both proposed and final rules. Read more about what the APTA is doing and how to get involved here

I hope you all are enjoying your last few days of summer before the leaves start turning.  I hope you all already received an invite to our annual Fall Mixer on the 20th! This is sure to be the best year yet. This is a great opportunity to meet other students from around the state for a day of food and fun!

    • ​Implements the new Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM)
    • Group Therapy adjusted to 2-6 patients doing the same or similar activities

  • APTA Legislative Advocacy Activity
    • Legislation to Include PTs in Student Loan Relief Program Introduced
      • The proposed change,  would allow PTs to participate in the National Health Services Corps (NHSC), a federal initiative that provides greater patient access to health care in rural and underserved areas—and incentivizes health care provider participation through a student loan forgiveness program.   • NEXT APTA Conference and Exposition 
    • Chicago June 12-15, 2019
    • Experience more than 60 interactive educational sessions, forward-thinking discussions, and networking opportunities

  • APTA House of Delegates
    • Chicago June 9 - 11 
    • The House of Delegates (House) is an APTA policy-making body comprised of voting chapter delegates, non-voting delegates (the Board of Directors and section, assembly, and PTA Caucus delegates), and consultants.
    • Delegates make decisions on issues that may have far-reaching implications for the association and for the profession of physical therapy. 
    • APTA members can view the open sessions of the House via livestream

  •  PDX AMBUCS Amtryke Fair - Saturday, June 8th
    • Atrium at Legacy Emanuel
    • Provides options for adaptive tricycles to children and adults with disabilities in Oregon and Washington
    • Learn more about this organization and sign up here to help build 11 new adaptive tricycles for kiddos!
  • LEAP Adaptive Ballet - August 3rd
    • Volunteer at the Northwest Rett Syndrome Association Conference
    • LEAP Adaptive Ballet is teaching a dance class for all the kids with Rett Syndrome
    • Need volunteers to work with kids from ages 2-39 with varying functional levels from those who are ambulatory, running and in wheelchairs.

  • Muscular Dystrophy Association Supper Camp - July 13-19th
    • MDA Summer camp give kids ages 8-17 the freedom to be kids with others who are just like them - at no cost to their families
    • We need Counselors to be with the kids day and night so they can do all the fun activities the camp offers. 
    • Great opportunity for hands-on experience in education, recreation, family social sciences and medical professions as well as 140-hours volunteer hours!
